| Looks
can be deceptive. Although at first sight Sherborne House looks
in reasonably good repair in fact the roof of the House is in
a pretty bad way. Disintegration and collapse are only a few
short years away. |
|
 |
|

|
|
The
constant leaks threaten the structure of the building and the
precious interior features such as the mural and panelling.
|
|
Water
seepage is in danger of damaging the priceless mural by Sir
James Thornhill, Serjeant Painter to King George I and
II. Unless the roof is repaired, the mural could be lost forever.
Seepage has also badly affected the Houses' outside fabric.
Internally, it is damaging walls and floors.
|
|
Needless
to say the electrical and plumbing systems desperately need
replacing. The longer this takes, the more expensive it will
become. The upper floors are also not suitable for public
use which restricts the continuation and development of our
arts activities.
|
|
Right
now Sherborne House can be saved for a comparatively small
sum - bearing in mind the final result: a functioning, superbly
equipped arts centre housed in a superb 18th Century House
boasting a fully restored mural. Nor is the arts centre a
mere dream. Sherborne House has already established itself
as one of the most exciting and innovative arts centres throughout
the South West. There were 20,000 recorded visits to the House
last year alone.
|
|
Whether
you are interested in preserving the Houses' historical features
or you support its arts activity Sherborne House needs you
- the South West needs Sherborne House.
|
|
So
please, if you saw Sherborne House on Restoration, do remember
that behind the facade lies a very different story.
|
|
In
this first round we were up against a derelict copper mine
in Cornwall and a concrete house in Bridgwater. They both
had considerable support and merit (like us!) to be selected
for the programme, so we were delighted to make the final
on the 8th August.
