Drawing on paper covered with mud is a way of retreating into a surface. The residue earth left after scraping leaves a monochrome surface devoid of movement or the time of day, creating an ambiguous topography that alludes to a macro or microscopic space. Such qualities are used to suggest a contemplative space with the viewer looking into, rather than at, a landscape.
