In these essentially monochromatic paintings the colour is applied in three tones - the central area being the darkest - the irregular deployment of lighter 'bands' within the middle tone of the 'border' tending to disrupt settled relationships between the tones, and induce colour values varying across an otherwise imperceptible range of shades.
