Caradon Quarry lies to the north west of Liskeard. It is intended the granite matrix of feldspar, quartz and mica is replicated in the painting's surface. The colour stimulus derives from the minerals malachite and chrysocolla; the circular devices are in response to the plug-and-feather method of splitting stone.
