Workshop
ARTISTS
IN SCHOOLS
The
Colour + Chemistry Project at Sherborne House in Dorset has just
produced a report on the seven workshops it has been running with
artists in schools this year.
The
workshops took place in secondary, primary and special schools
all over Somerset and Dorset and students' work produced during
the workshops was recently displayed at a Sherborne House exhibition
called Vibrant 2.
All
the workshops employed professional artists to help students explore
the relationships that exist between art and science and to encourage
them to experiment with new techniques and materials. The artists
involved - three of whom live in the South West - included a textiles
artist, an installation artist, a digital artist, a painter working
with SMART paints and a kinetic artist currently working with
a SMART material called Nitinol.
"Art
and Science are essentially doing the same thing - understanding
nature," says kinetic artist Balint Bolygo. "They may use a different
vocabulary but they are looking at exploring and explaining the
same thing."
"
We've had to think for ourselves, use our brains," says one of
Balint's students. " We've been thinking about how science and
art link - not just how something looks but how it works."
For
the teachers involved, the workshops were an opportunity to extend
their pupils' knowledge, to provide them with valuable new experiences
and to let them work on a project with a professional artist.
"The
workshops opened teachers' eyes to the possibilities of science
and art disciplines collaborating on projects in school, " says
Caroline Wallace, the Colour + Chemisty Schools Officer. "In two
schools, the art and chemistry departments joined forces to forge
even closer links between the two disciplines."
Using
the schools workshops as a model, Sherborne House hopes to work
closely with schools in the future and with this in mind is having
a champagne reception for teachers in Somerset and Dorset at Sherborne
House on Thursday 9th November. Some of the teachers involved
in the schools workshops will be invited to give a short presentation
about their experiences.
