Vibrant Young Artists at Sherborne House

'Everything was great! Doing Art and Science together was really interesting.'

So said 14 year old Heidi from Sturminster Newton High School, one of the young Artists whose work will be on show as part of the exciting, innovative and colourful exhibition that is at Sherborne House from Thursday June 22nd - Sunday June 25th.

The work, done by students from six schools and Yeovil College, ranges from textiles to kinetic sculptures and is the result of the one and two day workshops that have taken place since February of this year. As part of the Colour and Chemistry Project, Schools in Somerset and Dorset were invited to bid for an Artist to work with pupils in their School for a day on a project that related to the themes of colour and the chemistry of colour. Schools were encouraged to see this as an opportunity for Art and Science departments to work together, thus allowing pupils to realise the close relationship that exists between the two disciplines.

There was funding from the Colour + Chemistry Project for the equivalent of seven one-day Schools Workshops. Teachers and Artists were invited to attend a one-day Symposium at Sherborne House in November 2005 and from this the teachers took away ideas about how they would like to explore chemistry and colour with their pupils.

The work on show comes from six schools and Yeovil College and the ages of the young Artists range from seven year olds to nineteen year olds. The Artists who led the workshops were Textile Artist Daisy Bewes from Dorset, Kinetic Sculptor Balint Bolygo, Installation Artist Simon Lee Dicker from Somerset, Digital Artist Janine Rook from Cornwall and Painter Franziska Schenk.

The pupils who have participated in the project have been extremely enthusiastic, as 14 year old Stephen from Yewstock School said, 'I loved all of it - the whole lot.'

This show is a rare opportunity to see what schools within the local area are achieving and it is hoped that a wide audience will come to see and enjoy the work.

The VIBRANT 2 exhibition runs from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th June at Sherborne House. Entrance is FREE and opening hours are 10.30am to 4.30pm.
