Artists Comments

'I was particularly fascinated by the shape memory materials. I might consider using them. Others were already familiar to me so I will continue integrating them into my projects.' ZB

'I didn't see a new material that instantly relates to my work but I will investigate memory wire websites. It would have been interesting to hear from artists who were science related. As an artist who is inspired by the beauty of raw materials I needed to see and feel more stuff to generate ideas.' DB

'I think (the colour lab) was a very good introduction. It has certainly thrown up some possibilities but it will take a while to find out how I will actually be able to use the technology.' GB

'It has been good to see the materials in action. I am very interested in using the smart wire - I can definitely see a cross-over with my own textiles work.' LC

'(The Colour Lab) will make me more analytical and colour aware. It encouraged me to think bigger and think of asking for help in terms of resources and partnerships.' AC

'The (Colour Lab) presentations could have benefited through having a speaker/artist who was involved in Colour & Chemistry practice.' SLD

'I would have greatly appreciated more evidence and use of nano technology in textiles. I am currently creating working drawings exploring ideas introduced during the Symposium.' SH

'I did gain a great deal from the Symposium, mainly in furthering my understanding of colour and light; learning more about the chemistry of modern dyes and extending my knowledge of smart materials and seeing them in action.' JN.

'I was looking for new insights into colour from the perspective of non-artists - fuel for ways of pushing my own use of colour (forward).' PW

'(The Colour Lab) will help me work out how I can use new developments happening in the world of glass. People are always asking me about smart glass as I work in the field of public art and I would like to be better informed in a practical way.' SW

'I would have liked more time for debate/interaction with speakers - (I would have) found this more inspiring than just being fed information!' JR

'The actual demonstration of materials (was my favourite). As artists I think we're not too worried about how something works and prefer to get on and use it.' MS

'It has certainly been relevant to my current research into photochromatic and gonio-apparent pigments. I hope to extent this research into 'night glow' pigments and possibly thermochromatics, and apply both within painting.' KS

'I would have liked to see an integrated art/science approach to the presentations, rather than scientists acquainting the audience with materials. I have incorporated fluorescent and photochromic materials in my present residency at the University of Southampton.' PP

'The hands-on experimenting with the products was the most useful (workshop) but as our group had it last it made the other workshops less productive.' SK

'I found the hands-on workshop the most successful as I find it much easier to visualise the practical application of the materials, having had a chance to dabble.' ER

'My work has always concerned itself with science, but the Colour Lab has introduced ideas and materials that I probably would not have come across otherwise.' BB

'Working as a public artist I hope to include smart materials in the future - colour measurement is something I hope to address within my paintings.' SE

'The demonstration (workshop) was the most informative and interesting. The workshops were disappointing - little exchanging of ideas, 'thinking big' was poorly orchestrated. Too short a time for the subject matter.' PE

'(The symposium) has inspired me to consider aspects of colour I would not have formerly considered and given me access to materials I did not know existed.' TS

'(The Symposium) added to my overall knowledge of developments in this field. I may be using some of the new materials in my work in the future. They've become part of my vocabulary that can be selected and used when required. I'd have got much more from the workshops if they'd been longer. 2 days would have been good.' LJ

'(The Symposium) has given me a subtler understanding of how we perceive colour, how it works. This will definitely filter into my work and has already. I feel it would have been better to separate the schools element - perhaps give teachers access to artists' CVs allowing for a more thoughtful process of selection. More time with the experts would have been very useful. ' AF

'I particularly liked the 'hands on' workshop - it gave me a chance to sample what was discussed and therefore give me more understanding of the information. I would have been happy to pay a little bit more towards the day's cost and receive a small sample pack of the materials, pigments etc to try out straight away.' SS

'The Ask the Experts session was a perfect opportunity to clear up any confusion and get any extra information. The Thinking Big workshop could have had more potential if there was different structuring. It may have been particular to our group but some people obviously felt wary about openly discussing their ideas.' CD
